Autumnal Landscapes

I am a hopeless landscape photographer. Despite living in an area of outstanding natural beauty, visited by 16 million people each year glued to their phone cameras, I admit to being easily bored when taking pictures of things which are stationary 🤷🏻‍♀️

However, a friend was going to the Yorkshire Dales for the day last week and asked if I wanted to join him and being as though the weather is still unseasonably mild and dry I didn’t take any persuading. The drive was gorgeous with the moors and fells painted in purple, olive and gold, and it was a change to go somewhere I hadn’t been before.

Our first stop was to photograph a bridge famous for its reflection in a river. To get the reflection central involved wading some way into the water but I’d taken my wellies so all was good. It was only as I stood there, balanced precariously on slippery stones, with my feet getting colder by the second that I realised both boots had sprung a leak since I last wore them! So I ended up sitting on the river bank pouring water out of my wellies and the rest of the day soggy and sockless🧦💦

After a hot brew we doubled back via twisty single track roads, bordered by fell pastures dotted with stone barns, and ended up at Wain Wath Force, which looked very picturesque against a backdrop of Autumn leaves. In order to take detailed pictures of waterfalls you need a Neutral Density Filter, but I’d changed lenses since I last did any river photography and none of my ND filters fitted my new lens so my water is a bit mushy – I think Santa might be visiting Mr Amazon this Xmas 😉

Pretty as the scenery was and despite my best attempts at editing, these pictures will never be used for anything and certainly wouldn’t pass muster in a photography competition but that was never the point. It’s so much more important to just enjoy being amongst nature especially at this stunning time of year, and despite risking pneumonia due to my soaking wet feet I thoroughly enjoyed my day out 🙂.
