Why are we here? I don’t mean here on my website together, but here at all? I’m sure it’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves and one which the wisest Sages throughout history have attempted to answer, but the truth is nobody knows.
Some believe we are just as grains of sand on a beach, here by random chance and without significance, with no other purpose than to eventually be washed away by the tide. Others believe we are created by God (although the God in question differs between religions) and here to serve Him and spread his message (which, again, differs between religions).
And what of suffering? When bad things happen to us is it just bad luck? Divine retribution for sin, both known and unknown? Are we being punished by karma for unremembered deeds in a previous incarnation?
At the end of the day I’m not sure it really matters whether an actual answer to this most fundamental of Life’s questions exists or not. The fact is we are here and we either chose to make meaning out of this thing we call Life or we just wait to die.
From various experiences I’ve had over my nearly 6 decades, which I will go into in other posts, the personal meaning I have attached to my life has been that of soul growth and being part of the growth of other souls. I feel deeply that I am a spiritual being having a human experience and when my body stops functioning my soul/consciousness will continue – I have no clue in what form or to where. My soul & consciousness exist outside of my human body. They are, in essence, energy and energy cannot be destroyed only transformed (a fundamental law of physics).
The concept of divine energy is the driving principle of my life and I’m excited to share that with you in other posts. For now, though, I shall leave this question with you: what gives your life meaning?
